2025-2026 Large Ensemble Absence Request Form Logo
  • 2025-2026 Large Ensemble Absence Request Form

  • Students are required to submit absence request forms at least three weeks in advance, though more advance notice is encouraged.  Special absence requests less than three weeks in advance may be considered on a case-by-case basis, and only if the student can submit direct evidence that the circumstance is outside of the student’s control; the request will be denied automatically in all other cases.

Ensemble members are required to be available for the entirety of regularly scheduled rehearsals of ensembles to which they are assigned, and for opera sitzprobe and dress rehearsals (if assigned) for the entire quarter. Other obligations, such as chamber music rehearsals, lessons, recitals, recital rehearsals, or part-time jobs, must not be scheduled during ensemble rehearsals. Students may be excused from a rehearsal in certain cases, but not from a concert or recording session, which will result in a failing grade.  Situations that merit consideration for an excused absence from a rehearsal include:

    ·         important auditions (graduate school, professional orchestras, etc.)

    ·         high-level or high-profile performance opportunities (services with a ROPA or local professional orchestra, concerto solo opportunities)

    ·         major family events (weddings, funerals, etc.)

    ·         NB: religious holidays/events will always be excused

Ensemble directors will follow up directly to let you know if the request has been approved.

In the event of illness or last-minute emergency, please email the director directly before your rehearsal or performance.

Extended absence/accommodation requests must be submitted to related studio faculty, Director of Orchestral Studies (Jill Williamson), ensemble director, and College Office.

For full attendance policies, please review the Student Handbook for Classical Instrumental Large Ensembles.
